Area & Climate

South Puget Sound Community College is located minutes from downtown Olympia, the state capital, with a total population of 150,000 people. Olympia is known for its unique blend of small-town friendliness, business and political activities, and natural beauty. It is only a short drive to Seattle, the Pacific Ocean, and the Cascade ski slopes. Set in a lush wooded area, the campus is well-kept, attractive and secure. Olympia has a mild climate that provides for cool summers and temperate winters, with an annual rainfall of 50 inches per year. Normal temperatures range from 5 C in January to 25 C in July.

Education (Transfer degree, Technical degrees and Certificates)

Founded in 1962, South Puget Sound Community College is one of the fastest growing colleges in Washington State. We are a fully accredited public two-year college providing personal attention, small classes, and a lower cost of living. Students completing the Associate of Arts degree program with a strong Grade Point Average (GPA) transfer readily to other universities in the United States. The college also offers over forty (40) technical degrees and certificates. We have an up-to-date library collection, a bookstore, computer lab, counseling and career center, and a cafeteria. The academic calendar is based on the quarter (10 weeks) system. Classes begin in September, January, April and June.

English Language Requirement (No TOEFL Policy)

Students with a 61/173/500 TOEFL may enroll directly into the degree program. However, admission to the college does not require a TOEFL score, since students are also able to take the college's own placement test upon arrival. Students without a TOEFL score are placed into Intensive English and/or Academic courses based on their placement test scores.

Intensive English Program

The Intensive English Program at South Puget Sound Community College will help you improve your English proficiency for academic purposes, business, communication, careers, and culture. The Program offers:
  • Four levels of courses in reading, writing, communication, and grammar
  • Small class size (10-15 students per class)
  • Highly qualified and experienced Intensive English instructors
  • Language Partner Program designed to help international students to learn English and make friends with American students
  • Free tutoring help, writing center, and computer labs are available to students free of charge
  • Extracurricular activities: trips, social events, and celebrations
  • Guaranteed admission into college-level classes after completing the Intensive English Program
  • Rolling admission: students are admitted four times a year (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer)
  • TOEFL is not required for admission. Students' English proficiency is tested upon arrival by taking a placement test.

Students with TOEFL 61/173/500 may be admitted directly to academic programs.

Campus Life

The student population represents the community with a wide range of age groups, ethnic backgrounds and religions. There is an active Homestay program and apartments available within a short commuting distance to the college. All are easily accessible by public bus service which is free for all full-time students. Some of the college activities available include field trips, student clubs, student government and newspaper, a gymnasium with training room, intercollegiate and intramural sports, and campus performances by comedians, musicians, and noted speakers.

For International Students

An orientation is given to all international students to provide information about the college and community. The International Student Office provides visa assistance and academic counseling which including class selection and tutoring services. Free tutoring and transfer assistance are available through the International Student Office. One of the many student clubs is the International Student Association (ISA), which brings together U.S. and foreign students to share their experiences and cultures. ISA sponsors trips, social events, and community service activities.

Employment

Upon graduating from our college, students enjoy an opportunity of working with some of the well known companies in the world: Intel, Disney, Starbucks and many others. While pursuing their degree at the college, students may work on campus part-time at the cafeteria, library, tutoring center and other areas on campus.
