Overview

Founded in 1961, Onondaga Community College is a comprehensive two-year college operating within the State University of New York (SUNY) higher education system.

With more than 11,000 students and 7,000 studying on campus, it is the second largest undergraduate college in Central New York and was recently named one of the fastest-growing community colleges of its size in the United States by Community College Week.

39 international students from 23 countries are currently enrolled.

Location

Onondaga is located 4 miles (6 km) from the dynamic Syracuse city center, in the geographic center of New York State, in the northeast United States.

The scenic 230-acre (93 ha) campus is within 375 miles (604 km) of major US and Canadian cities like Boston, New York City, Washington, D.C., Toronto and Montreal. Other attractions in the region include Niagara Falls, the Finger Lakes Region, and the Adirondack Mountains.

Onondaga offers academic excellence in 49 associate degree and/or certificate programs of study that challenge students to learn through formal course work, acquire real-world experience and develop marketable life skills. Online degree programs are also available.

Transferability

Students who plan to transfer to a four-year university for a bachelor's degree are advised to prepare early in their academic program by consulting with a transfer counselor.

Onondaga maintains formal articulation agreements with more than 70 four-year colleges and universities (like Cornell University, Syracuse University, Rochester Institute of Technology, and SUNY partners). Articulation agreements ease direct transfer to four-universities with third-year (Junior) status without loss of academic credit.

Employment Preparation

Onondaga graduates acquire a solid academic and professional foundation as preparation for employment, and the Career and Applied Learning Center is available to assist with job search, internships, and community service learning.

ESL (English as a Second Language)

Onondaga offers no intensive ESL program. When applying, applicants from non-native English speaking countries must demonstrate a minimum English proficiency and the TOEFLŪ Test is required.

To supplement formal course work, ESL courses at the intermediate and advanced level may be available. Free, professional tutors are also available to help students improve writing and study skills.

Technology

The high-tech campus includes:

International Student Support

Under the Office of Multicultural and International Services, the International Student Services Office supports international students with:

New, all-suite residence halls offer students secure, apartment style on-campus living. Suites are equipped with full kitchen, living room, 2 full bathrooms and bedrooms.
