The University

Northern Kentucky University is located in a safe, suburban area just 11 kilometers from downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A. The university was founded in 1968 and is a four year public university. NKU offers 58 bachelor, 7 associate, 18 graduate degrees and an Intensive English program. All classes at the university are taught by full or part- time faculty with a 14:1 student to faculty ratio. Over 15,000 students, 351 of whom are international, attend Northern Kentucky University. There are more than 170 student organizations. NKU competes in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Valley Conference. Intercollegiate sports are offered for men and women in basketball, cross-country, soccer, tennis and golf; for men in baseball; and for women in fast-pitch softball and volleyball.

Academic Program

NKU operates on a semester calendar. To receive a bachelor's degree, students must complete a minimum of 128 credit hours. At least 64 credit hours are required for the associate degree.

The University offers a variety of career planning and placement, internship, independent study, work-study, and cooperative education programs. There is also a Health Counseling and Prevention Services Office available. Other programs include an honors program, a program that allows for the dual enrollment of high school students, a program where students can combine their career interests in the liberal arts and engineering fields, and University 101, a semester-long orientation program for freshmen.

NKU recognizes credit earned through the Advanced Placement Program and the general, subject, and institutional tests of the College-Level Examination Program. A maximum of 45 credit hours may be applied toward the bachelor's degree from the AP and CLEP examinations. The International Baccalaureate Program allows students to earn credit in science, mathematics, psychology, and languages.

Faculty

More than 82 percent of the faculty members at NKU hold a doctoral degree or the terminal degree in their field. Classes are small, with a student-faculty ratio of 18:1. All classes are taught by faculty members; no classes are taught by graduate assistants.

International Student Union

The International Student Union is a student organization for students from all countries. ISU meets weekly and hosts the annual International Potluck dinner that is attended by over 300 people. This organization is very active in the community by educating others about their home countries. Members often meet for international movies, sport and social activities.
