The Island of Hawai`i, with beautiful beaches, lush rain forests, spectacular mountains and an active volcano is home to the Intensive English Program at Hawai`i Community College (Hawai`i CC). This quiet, friendly, and safe town-the second largest in the State of Hawai`i-gives International Students a chance to learn English in a beautiful and culturally diverse environment as they experience a different side of Hawai`i and the United States.

Hilo: A Great Place to Live and Study

The Big island of Hawai`i is known for its quality of life. A good mix of tropical rains and sunny days provide the island with lush greenery throughout the year. With a population of 45,000, Hilo has less crime, pollution, traffic, noise, and crowding than Honolulu or other metropolitan areas. The beach, mountain, and forest areas are minutes away by car. Join our students who swim, surf, snorkel, dive, hike, camp, and run in their free time!

The College

Hawai`i Community College, a campus of the nationally ranked University of Hawaii System, offers international students 22 Associate of Arts or Associate of Applied Science degrees in vocational arts, liberal arts, business, nursing, and forestry. In addition, Hawai`i CC is the only community college in the United States with a Hawaiian Lifestyles degree program with an option to transfer to a 4-year degree program in Hawaiian Studies. All degree programs give students chances for an internship to apply their learning to work experience, service learning, and Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation. Hawaii CC currently enrolls over 2000 students. It is a small college that offers personalized care for all of its students.

Intensive English Program

The Mission of the Intensive English Program (IEP) at Hawai`i Community College is to provide academic English instruction and comprehensive student support services to international students seeking academic, professional or personal goals in a rich, cross-cultural environment.

The IEP offers 20 hours a week of academic English instruction in reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammar skills. Students are prepared with the skills that they need to study in American universities.
The IEP offers a wide variety of student support services to introduce students to the social, cultural, educational, and recreational aspects of Hawai`i.

To ensure the quality of the instruction and services that the IEP offers, the IEP is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) and is a member of the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP).

IEP Highlights

No TOEFL required to enter the IEP-Beginners are welcomed
Four levels of instruction from Beginning to High-intermediate
Individualized attention in small classes of maximum 15 students
Experienced, dedicated teachers
Strong emphasis on improving spoken and written communication skills
Conversation Partners Program, English Conversation class, and TOEFL Preparation class to improve your speaking and test-taking skills
Access to self-paced reading program to improve reading skills
Academic Workshops on the US Education System, and degree programs offered at Hawaii CC
Institutional TOEFL administered 5 times a year
Conditional Admission to Hawaii CC
Special Agreement to serve beginning level students who want to enter Kapiolani Community College

Student Services

Students in the IEP receive a student identification card which gives them access to the following:

Computer facilities throughout the campus
Library borrowing privileges
Student clubs and activities
Academic advising
Career advising student health center
Free multi-lingual access to the Internet and email

In addition, students can receive the following assistance from IEP staff:

Personalized assistance with off-campus housing arrangements done prior to your arrival, airport pick-up, assistance with apartment check-in, assistance with bank accounts, utilities and other needs upon arrival
Three days of orientation, placement testing, personalized assistance and social activities
Weekend trips to unique and interesting sights around the island.
Individualized academic advising, immigration advising and personal assistance.
Transportation for shopping
Assistance with applications to Hawaii CC and other Colleges in the University of Hawai`i System
A graduation ceremony which includes a luncheon, flower lei, and a Certificate of Participation
Japanese and English speaking staff

Housing

The IEP assists students by arranging for housing prior to their arrival. The IEP utilizes several off-campus student apartments which are fully furnished and affordable, within walking distance to school.
